Within the resources section, you will find flash card games, quizzes, and mental abacus (listening) activities.  You will also be able to find additional soroban exercises loaded by your teacher and watch videos of soroban practices.

Flash Cards Games

There are three different stages of soroban flash card games.  You will be shown 20 different flash cards in each game.  All you need to do is choose the time limit you are most comfortable with and type in the answer in the blank provided for each flash card shown.

Quizzes

All students can try out all the maths quizzes within this section.  Within Toucan level 1 quizzes, you will find that you need to complete 10 questions each time within 10 minutes.  You can take the same quiz as often as you like as you will get slightly different questions each time. Here are different types of quiz questions you will find within the quiz sets. 1. Fill in the blank – if you see blank boxes, this means that you just need to type the answer in the boxes. Sometimes, you will see a blank box with many answers (in a dropdown menu).  In this case, just click on the correct answer. 2. Ordering a sequence – if you have been asked to order ,for example, flash cards, all you need to do is drag the boxes to form the correct sequence. 3. Multiple choice questions – there are two types of multiple choice questions.  If the bullets are in the forms of circles, just click on one answer.  If the bullets are in square shapes, you can click on more than one answer. 4. Matching – if it is a matching question, you will find the answers in the forms of puzzle pieces.  All you need to do is drag and put two puzzle pieces together to form an answer. 5. True/False – I think you know what to do here. We will be publishing more quizzes for different Toucan levels, hopefully soon.  In the meantime, do try the quizzes out.  Every time you complete a quiz, the results will be sent to Nisih.  If you ever find the questions slightly hard, don’t give up.  Just try them again.

Listening/Mental Abacus

You will find two recordings in each exercise.  Please listen to the recordings and fill in the correct answer at the end of each question. These exercises are targetted at children who have been doing the soroban for some time.  They are expected to do the sums without using the soroban.  As the children listen to the recordings, they are encouraged to imagine moving the beads during the sums without actually touching the beads.  These exercises are best attempted in the sequence laid out below.  Your children will gradually attempt more difficult sums at shorter timings. Happy trying!

Additional Soroban Exercises

You will find additional exercises within this section divided into different book levels you are studying.

Soroban Practice Videos

You will find many videos here on how to use the soroban to do maths/sums.  These videos will show you how to do the sums step by step.  The abacus practices form parts of the soroban learning process.
